Carotid Ultrasound

A carotid ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive test used to evaluate blood flow through the carotid arteries in the neck. These arteries carry blood to the brain. If they become narrowed or blocked, the risk of stroke can increase.

At Hackensack Neurology, carotid ultrasound testing may be recommended to help assess stroke risk, investigate symptoms, or monitor known vascular disease.

What Is a Carotid Ultrasound?

A carotid ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the carotid arteries and measure blood flow. The test can help identify narrowing, plaque buildup, or other changes that may affect circulation to the brain.

Why a Carotid Ultrasound May Be Recommended

  • Evaluation of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) risk
  • Assessment of carotid artery narrowing or blockage
  • Monitoring of known carotid artery disease
  • Investigation of dizziness, weakness, or other neurological symptoms
  • Follow-up for patients with vascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or smoking history

What to Expect During the Test

During the exam, a small handheld device called a transducer is moved gently over the neck. A gel is applied to help transmit the sound waves. The test is painless and typically takes about 30 minutes.

What the Results Can Show

  • Plaque buildup in the carotid arteries
  • Narrowing of the artery, also called carotid stenosis
  • Changes in blood flow to the brain
  • Areas that may require additional evaluation or treatment

Why This Test Matters

Carotid ultrasound can play an important role in stroke prevention. By identifying reduced blood flow or plaque in the carotid arteries, your neurologist can recommend the next steps for treatment, monitoring, or further testing.
