Skin Biopsy for Small Fiber Neuropathy and Parkinson’s Disease
A skin biopsy is a minimally invasive diagnostic test that can help evaluate certain nerve-related conditions, including small fiber neuropathy and, in some cases, Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. The test involves taking a very small sample of skin to examine nerve fiber density or other microscopic changes.
At Hackensack Neurology, skin biopsy testing may be recommended when symptoms suggest nerve damage that may not appear on standard nerve conduction testing.
What Is a Skin Biopsy?
A skin biopsy is an in-office procedure in which a tiny sample of skin is removed, usually from the leg or another targeted area, and sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The biopsy can provide valuable information about small nerve fibers that help control pain, temperature sensation, and certain autonomic functions.
Why a Skin Biopsy May Be Recommended
- Evaluation for suspected small fiber neuropathy
- Burning, tingling, numbness, or pain in the feet or hands
- Symptoms of autonomic dysfunction in select patients
- Further evaluation when EMG and nerve conduction studies are normal but symptoms persist
- Assessment that may support the diagnostic workup for Parkinson’s disease or related neurodegenerative conditions in appropriate cases
What to Expect During the Procedure
The area is numbed with local anesthetic, and a very small skin sample is collected. The procedure is quick and generally well tolerated. Most patients can return to normal activities shortly afterward.
What the Results Can Show
- Reduced nerve fiber density consistent with small fiber neuropathy
- Microscopic changes that may help clarify the cause of symptoms
- Additional information to support diagnosis and treatment planning
Why This Test Matters
Small fiber neuropathy can cause real discomfort and functional limitations, yet it may not appear on more traditional nerve tests. A skin biopsy can provide important answers and help guide a more accurate diagnosis. In select cases, it may also contribute useful information in the evaluation of Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.
Schedule an Evaluation
If you have ongoing numbness, tingling, burning pain, or other unexplained nerve-related symptoms, Hackensack Neurology offers advanced diagnostic testing to help identify the cause and guide next steps in care.
